In brief:A major army training area with multiple uses, including some public access, farming and nature conservation. The Plain is the largest area of chalk grassland in Europe, with multiple nature conservation and archaeological designations. Much of the grassland is grazed with beef and dairy cattle and sheep, either as free ranging herded stock or in temporary electric fenced pens, as part of farm tenancies.
